Early Fall Apple Tree Care

This Food Safari doesn’t take us far, but if you are an orchardist, it’s an important trip to take.

This Journey takes us to our back field or wherever your fruit trees grow. Proper fall care ensures healthy trees the following season and beyond.

The protocol couldn’t be easier:

  1. HARVEST YOUR FRUIT and clear away any drops that you cannot use or give away. This stopes disease from spreading and pest from seeing a free lunch.
  2. CLEAR DEBRIS like leaves and branches, twigs, etc. We don’t want to harbor bacteria.
  3. PROTECT THE TRUNK only needed if the tree s are young , but then a wrap or mesh can help
  4. WATER DEEPLY especially after the summer we’re had, a deep soaking is beneficial. Followed by a gift of mulch or compost to retain moisture., several inches away from the trunk itself . We want to do this early on before the roots could possibly freeze.

It’s too late in the season to fertilize,or to do any pruning so skip that thought until Spring.

These tips should give you a leg up on keeping your apple or other fruit trees happy and healthy!
